What is Ketamine Assisted Therapy?

Ketamine is a valuable resource for treating depression and/or helping patients who suffer from immense levels of anxiety or fear. Ketamine relaxes chandelier cells in the brain, which have powerful control over when cells fire and pass messages on to other neurons (Psychology Today)

Ketamine is a dissociative medicine or anesthetic that was developed for pain management over 50 years ago. Ketamine affects two primary neurotransmitters in the brain; it causes an increase in prefrontal Glutamate receptors and global brain GABA levels. This enables your brain to dissociate from your physical and emotional responses to triggers which allows for neural growth, forging new, healthier neural pathways in the brain.

What conditions does ketamine assist with?

  • Major depression
  • Severe anxiety
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar Depression
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

FAQs

How do I know if I qualify for Ketamine Therapy?2022-08-31T16:23:36+00:00

You can schedule a visit to MediZen Institute to be evaluated by our medical professionals.  Our wellness CNP offers intake consultations to ensure that the prospective patient is a good candidate. In this consultation, we will review the process. The consultation fee is $275

What is the difference between ketamine and other psychedelics?2022-08-31T17:14:51+00:00

Psychedelics can generate powerful experiences, with deeply moving encounters. Ketamine, however, creates more of a general lifting experience, lightening emotional burden and enabling people to free themselves from their physical reality.

While ketamine relaxes chandelier cells in the brain, psychedelics stimulate pyramidal cells in a way that will override the grip of the chandelier cells, which can overwhelm them.

Do I need a referral for Ketamine Therapy?2022-08-12T13:47:57+00:00

A referral is not necessary. You will be evaluated by a member of the MediZen medical team prior to approval for Ketamine Therapy.

What should I expect from Ketamine Therapy?2022-08-31T17:18:56+00:00

Patients will have a consultation with the medical provider prior to any treatment. Typically, Ketamine Therapy is conducted 1-2 times per week for several weeks.

Each session lasts several hours as the patient receives intramuscular injections by our certified medical staff.

Ketamine Therapy rooms are intentionally private and comfortable, with minimized external stimuli.

Patients are required to have transportation plans after therapy as they may experience some mild disorientation.

We advise that patients clear their day of work or normal activities so you can reintegrate and work through their emotional process.

Integration is ESSENTIAL. We will provide you with resources for continued support between and after your sessions.

How does Ketamine Therapy treat depression?2022-08-31T17:21:21+00:00

We administer ketamine in subanesthetic doses while monitored by qualified medical professionals. Activating the chandelier cells of the brain relieves the brain of obsessing over thoughts, feelings or emotions so that you can better process your mood and mental state without judgement.

Are there any specific medical conditions that would prohibit me from receiving ketamine treatment?2022-08-31T17:22:44+00:00

Ketamine Therapy is not allowed for women who are pregnant, nursing, or actively trying to get pregnant. We prohibit clients who are undergoing cancer treatment unless they are specifically recommended and directly referred by their oncologist for cancer-related depression.

We do not suggest ketamine therapy for individuals who live or work in unstable environments or are actively engaged in unsafe relationships, physically and mentally.

How long will the effects of ketamine treatment last?2022-08-31T17:34:10+00:00

The effects of treatment can last a few weeks up to months. After a series of treatments, some clients may remain symptom-free for extended period of time. This allows for booster treatments as often as is needed. This is typically determined by you, your mental health provider and our medical providers.

What is the cost of Ketamine Therapy?2022-09-02T20:37:07+00:00

Cost per treatment is $250. There is a $275 consultation fee to begin the process.
